BlackBerry squeezes in to Djuzz radar as device for mobile gamers

Global mobile media company BuzzCity has noticed a growth in game downloads via BlackBerry devices, stemming from the increasing numbers of non-business users of the RIM device.

BuzzCity’s latest Djuzz Mobile Gaming Metrics report attributed the blossoming use to more affordable data and pre-paid packages from local telcos as well as RIM’s launch of its own AppWorld and support for HTML5 (WebWorks) last year.

While downloads via BlackBerry increased three-fold during the second half of the year, Nokia and Sony Ericsson are currently the top two brands for mobile game downloads in Malaysia.

“Mobile gaming is going from strength to strength and we expect 2011 to be an exciting time for the mobile gaming community, from developers through to brands who use games to reach their audiences, while we anticipate further growth from non-traditional gaming devices such as Blackberry,” said CEO of BuzzCity, Dr KF Lai.

The report for December 2010 highlights trends in mobile gaming over the past eleven months and analyses the traffic and usage of its mobile gaming portal Djuzz, which has already delivered nearly 50 million games in less than one year of operations.

Djuzz delivered more than 9 million games for December alone, which was an 18% increase. During this month there were 120,000 unique daily visitors on Djuzz (up by 9% from November) with each one generating at least four downloads.

The top five countries which have been most active on Djuzz are India, Indonesia, United States, Nigeria and South Africa. Findings from the report suggest awareness campaigns improve downloads and this includes coverage of major events e.g. sporting events, movie launches and campaigns related to major holidays.

Top categories over the year remain as follows:
  • Action & Adventure (24%)
  • Racing (13%)
  • Sports (10%)
  • 3D Games (10%)
  • Arcade (9%)
