The evening also saw UNRESERVED honouring two individuals who made a mark in their respective fields and who embody qualities that have made them stand out from the rest. These qualities include being passionate about what they do while remaining courageous, maintaining integrity and their sense of fun. They were voted UNRESERVED’s Man and Woman of the Year.
Proton managing director Dato’ Sri Syed Zainal Abidin bin Syed Mohamed Tahir was named UNRESERVED Man of the Year while Yayasan Chow Kit (formerly known as NurSalam) consultant and head of Advocacy and Funding Dr Hartini Zainuddin received the Woman of the Year Award. The recipients were also presented with a Panasonic Lumix GX 1 Camera for which they are tasked with capturing their lives for the next year, which will be documented in the UNRESERVED this time next year. The event was organised by STYLO, and best-dressed prizes were judged by Dato’ Nancy Yeoh, Dato’ Farah Khan, and the UNRESERVED’s Senior Fashion Writer, Dazman Manan. They chose Mercedes President & CEO Roland Folger and well-known emcee Lexie Rodriquez. Both received Lumix cameras to capture their dress sense.
Also at the event were Ford Models’ Supermodels of Malaysia, who were dressed in Mercedes-Benz Stylo Designer of the Year 2008 Michael Ong’s limited edition by Esco. Throughout the party, additional prizes kindly sponsored by Maybank, Caran d’Ache, Bric’s and Anya Hindmarch, were given out on the spot for ‘best party people’.
In the spirit of giving, UNRESERVED also presented a sum of RM25,000 to Yayasan Chow Kit, which was a percentage of the advertising revenue for the anniversary and Christmas issue of the magazine. Yayasan Chow Kit is a 24-hour crisis centre that focuses on children under 18. The centre provides marginalised children with basic needs as well as counselling and protection services, among others.
UNRESERVED, which was launched on Nov 26, 2010, is a fortnightly lifestyle magazine of business daily The Malaysian Reserve, which incorporates the International Herald Tribune. Distributed in the Klang Valley as a supplement to The Malaysian Reserve, it is also now available as a stand-alone publication priced at RM6 at major book stores and news agents. The magazine targets the decision makers and influentials in Malaysia with articles covering a mix of current affairs, life and culture. As one guest commented, “the magazine has style and substance”.
Kassandra sums up her vision with the team "Our goal was to reach for the stars a little, in terms of critical thinking and opinion. To take photographs that were a little more prosaic and descriptive. The benchmarks we set were high - a little TIME, a bit of Vanity Fair and a dash of How to spend it, with a heavy dose of what is relevant to Malaysia and the times in which we live."
