WE ASKED YES PARTICIPANTS ABOUT THEIR EXPERIENCES…

What was the best part about YES2009 that made a difference to you?

“It was an honor to meet a group of highly-intelligent and highly-motivated young people who will be future leaders and decision makers in Asia. Their energy is just so contagious, it gives me so much hope and optimism. I had engaging dialogue with them and was able to share what has been going on in our own country. We realized that we share many things in common and are clamouring for the same changes in our respective countries.”
Jennifer Caspe (Philippines)

“I met new friends, businessmen and got inspired by all the speakers. And also, I learned and knew other countries’ cultures like their language, education system in each country, etc. I’ve even learned Thai dancing lil’ bit from my new friend. YES 2009 was a memorable event.”
Sari Rachmatika (Indonesia)

“The best part of participating in YES209 is not one but many, meeting youths from different part of world and their cultures, enlightened by prominent speakers who are leaders and successful youth themselves and among all most importantly the happiness and peace we felt together as South East Asian youth, the feel of  power for change towards success and abetter life.”
Devindran Vijayan (Malaysia)

“The best part for participating in YES2009 was listening to the great and wonderful speakers like Biz Stone-Co founder of Twitter, Dato Seri Tony Fernandes CEO of Air Asia, and more..... And the unexpected speaker Donald Trump was LIVE from his Trump Tower to share his ideas with us!”
Terence Au Soon Fui (Brunei)

“The awesome speakers left me dumbfounded and starstruck with their inspirational talks. It made me realize just because I am 20 years old I cannot make a difference. If I really want to see change then I have to BE THE CHANGE.” Josephine Barbi Balilia (Philippines)

“Having 500 youths from ASEAN countries under one roof, representing each other’s countries, exchanging thoughts and views. 500 youths means 500 ideas, views and thoughts. Besides that was having people who are not only famous, but also successful in their own fields, sharing their experiences, the stories of their lives and what it took for them to become who they are now.”
Nur Nasyiraz Nazir (Malaysia)

“When Mr Tony Fernandes said: believe the unbelievable, it is motivation
for youth to remain consistent to the changes that you want. “Be creative”, a sentence that Biz stone said, it’s so inspired me to become more creative in seeking measures to achieve our desires, ambitions and ideals into a better level.” Ria Lihayati (Indonesia)

“We were are all motivated by those awesome speakers, they really rocked our world. They force us to think deeper, something that we have missed. Seachange is a very good stage for youth from different area and country to gather, share ideas and motivates each other. It gave us knowledge and strength that we never had before.“
Tan Peck Ying (Malaysia)

“At YES2009 I could speak about my thoughts and changes for my country, Indonesia, and South-East Asia in general. I could add up my friends.”
Dewi Cahyuningtyas (Indonesia)

“I have a very great experience in the summit. I met someone that has the same passion and dream. It makes me not feeling alone, lol. Apart from that, I can meet those great speakers. Like Dato Tony Fernandes, I read about him a lot, but I never met him, so I glad that I can finally met him, shake his hand and visited his office in the airport. I played scrabble with the world’s best player.”
See Khai Yuan (Malaysia)

“It was the first moment I came to Putrajaya International Convention Centre. Totally amazed! Huge conference rooms, professional organizers and great music. I’ve been watching The Apprentice for years and I was so eager to see Donald Trump. Thank you YES 2009 organizers, for giving me a chance to meet my hero!”
Nguyen Thanh Minh (Vietnam)

“For now, I am busy for the incoming Philippine elections for our Youth Elections in Education. I almost gave up on our current government but YES2009 kept my blood flowing and be motivated once again for positive changes I can contribute to my country. The speaker that I most loved and inspired to was Mr. Nando Parrado... tears welled off my cheeks and I couldn’t imagine I was listening to an inspiration and to a person that will forever CHANGE my life’s perspective.”
Hannah M. Quijano (Philippines)

“My personal favorites were the talks by Mr. David Magliano, Sir Bob Geldof and Mr. Donald Trump. I found their messages practical, refreshing and brutally honest. I think it’s because we all share personality traits that make us frank - even abrasive speakers, but with a huge emphasis on truthfulness and good intentions.”
Rochelle Dumlao (Philippines)

What made you want to participate in SEACHANGE?

“As a youth fresh out of college, I always dreamed of being a world changer. If people asked me what I want to achieve in my lifetime, I would jokingly answer: “World Domination!” And it is true. Call me idealistic, but I believe each person has been given different gifts with which we can us bless the world in our own little way. Mother Theresa said it this way, ‘We can do no great things, only small things with great love.’  This has always been my inspiration always.”
Jennifer Caspe (Philippines)

Because I wanted to speak of my hopes for personal change, my communities, and country. Then I realized there were a lot of people out there in SEAchange who could help me bringing my hope of change to reality.”
Sari Rachmatika (Indonesia)

“My plan is to gather all the information and reports submitted by different youths from all over SEACHANGE regions and brainstorm for a solution to solve the issues and problems faced by our youths or at least reduce them.”
Devindran Vijayan (Malaysia)

“I participated in this SEACHANGE because I wanted to change my personal life in term of time management. With positive thinking, positive energy and become a good leader. Even though the event was only for two days, I’ll continue to promote, share my experience to my friends. I’m trying to do some team building and motivation talks to the youth regarding CHANGE! Will help other countries do some charity programs for those people who need help.”
Terence Au Soon Fui (Brunei)

“I took the first step by answering the YES survey. Before going for the summit, I knew the speakers would somehow bring out the spirit and power within me. After the summit, I can see myself now as a more confident and am very proud of who I am now. “
Nur Nasyiraz Nasir (Malaysia)

“Truth be told, I thought this event really had a great potential in terms of bridging together youths all over SEA and so networking was on my mind!”
Ahmad Salahuddin (Malaysia)

“The things that made me participate in SEACHANGE is because I know this event is full of motivational force and makes participants take action, develop personal goals not for themselves alone but for the whole of society.”
Joffre G. Salde (Philippines)

“Voices have to be loud enough to be heard”. SEAchange wants one million youths in Southeast Asia experience personal change. Why don’t we join forces?
Nguyen Thanh Minh (Vietnam)

“At first, I joined Seachange to meet new people and new connections.. But I realized it wasn’t just about making friends and creating networks but it was about the positive changes we can make together. I now have the motivation to live life with dreams, a passion for change and with hope for development.”
Hannah M. Quijano (Philippines)

“I participated on this event because it was really my pleasure to serve people living below poverty line. I joined this event hoping someone or some organization who shares the same interest as I had could help me pursue my chosen endeavor which is to help the poor. I’m planning to do what Sir Bob Geldof has done!”
Eric John Brandino (Philippines)

What do you plan to do now that the event is over?

“I want to transfer spirit of this event to all my juniors in the university that they should join this summit, because it’s really inspiring and represents YOUTH. There is so much poverty Indonesia, but when we are UNITE as one to help them , it’s not impossible to kill poverty.”
 Arie Dwi Susanto (Indonesia)

“My plan is to gather all the information and reports submitted by different youths from all over SEACHANGE regions and brainstorm for a solution to solve the issues and problems faced by our youths or at least reduce them .”
Devindran Vijayan (Malaysia)

“Even though this event only for two days, I’ll continue to promote, share my experience to my friends, and everybody. I’m trying to do some team building and motivation talk to the youth regarding about CHANGE! Will help other countries do some charity program for those people who need help.”
Terence Au Soon Fui (Brunei)

“Next month, I with my mates at the University of the Philippines Baguio are planning to have a tree planting and outreach program. I will also introduce to them the Sea Change report so they can actively get involved and motivated. With regards, to Sea Change Philippines, we guys are planning to have a get together so that we can draft future plans and assign leaders for each island. This will make the seachange team systematic and centralized. We really want to be instruments for change. We are dying to end the culture of silence, indifference and apathy.”
Josephine Barbi Balilia (Philippines)

“YES brought my dreams alive. I want to tell you about our group which is called ‘Blue Dreams’. We started with 5 members, now we are a small family with 100 members. We are students from many universities in Ho Chi Minh City. ‘Blue Dreams’ is the Dreams of youth when we see many poor children, children who cannot hear, see or speak. We brought them scholarships, light and hope” on April, 18. This is the traditional day of people who have many defects on their bodies.  These scholarships were contributed by many companies and individuals. We have a day which call ‘Sun flower’ to remember Thuy – a young girl who died of cancer. Thuy’s wishes  is the name of the programe which is celebrated every year and it begin by To Oanh – a journalist – and we are volunteers. The program brings everybody to children who have cancer and we hope communities will care for children more and more. We also teach poor children whose families live on the junk boats. I grew from the poor land, and I think that I need share what life has given me. To give is to receive.”
Huong Giang (Vietnam)

“As I was saying to my co-delegates, I hope we can build something or form a group to help cater the youth of the nation’s needs. Maybe it’s a big idea, but I hope we can start it now, so we can move little by little into changing the world we are living in.”
Joanne Garces Gonzales (Philippines)

“I plan to be actively involved with youth society, I want to actively help to stop poverty. I am in Malaysia, I would love to go out to other countries to help people. I am a media student, majoring in broadcasting, so I would really love to be given the opportunity to broadcast in places where people are in need and to let the world see their suffering and so the whole world can give their help and support. I want the world to see the whole truth about what’s going on in certain parts of the world where truth is always hidden, where everything appears to be perfectly ok but deep down, it’s never ok.”
Nur Nasyiraz Nasir (Malaysia)

“I personally want to help organize the next YES2010! I thought YES2009 had a lot of potential that went unrealized, and rather than complain about it, I want to really directly help realize those potential. Due to people mostly hanging around in their own groups most of the time, I didn’t get to really meet most of the delegates from the other countries and so didn’t really get a chance to hear about the projects they were working on. But with the network that I’ve built from the event, I’ve some plausible projects in the loop that can make use of the contacts that I’ve gained that revolve around youth and entrepreneurism.”
Ahmad Salahuddin (Malaysia)

“It is all about change, as my university wants to change local people’s perception towards turtle eggs (where it were legally sold in market), we will fight so that it will be ban it in our state. As part of the youngsters that attended the climate change workshop, we hope the government will reconsider their policy in chopping down our rainforests.”
Tan Peck Ying (Malaysia)

“The Summit is done, but Change is just the beginning. With the YES2009
momentum, the SEAchange youth report is declared, and the signs are clear.
Personal change: It’s not just about helping myself, but how I can help others;
Community change: It’s not about change in leadership, but change in the mindset of the people; Campaigns we support: It’s not about the issues, It’s about the impact. With this report we know what should we do. YES2009, bring the possibilities for change we seek to make it real. There is many global issues
we can share and find out the solution with hand to hand way. About poverty,
education, peace & human rights, environment, health, and many more issues.  Still focus, commit, and stay in connection with the collectively action, we can make it happen. Changes we seek already started when the summit began.”
Andry Kidd (Indonesia)

“I’m writing on Facebook to share my experience in YES2009. What a pity that I can not share with you because the note is written in Vietnamese. As a co-founder, I’m enjoying my work at www.deltaviet.com, with strategies, financial plan and HR stuffs.”
Nguyen Thanh Minh (Vietnam)

“To all of you, guys and gals, the next generation to make change to our own country, do not just sit and watch the opportunity, just try to catch and create new opportunity to make CHANGE.”
Sothun Sang  (Cambodia)

“I would like for language, culture, and travel to be included in the larger picture alongside more pressing concerns such as education and economic prosperity. One of my most important personal goals is to continue running my website and encouraging other people to reach for their dreams via this route.”
Rochelle Dumlao (Philippines)
