Tuesday, 22 February 2011 16:11

It is going to be a month of singing mania in Malaysia as STAR World (Astro Channel 711), in partnership with Celcom and POS Malaysia, continues to bring viewers into the world of people with hopeful dreams and their journeys to become the biggest pop singer or a Broadway star. Both the highly-rated shows, Glee and American have not only attracted Celcom and POS Malaysia respectively to sign on as local presenters, but also on the regional level, the shows brought in sponsors Pearlie White for American Idol while Canon and Subaru sealed the deal with STAR World for Glee.

Since the return of Glee Club this season, it has quickly become a pop-culture phenomenon worldwide. Glee is hot on the heels of winning three Golden Globes 2011 for the categories of Best Television Series - Comedy Or Musical, Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series (Jane Lynch), Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television and Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television (Chris Colfer. The highest-rated new scripted series of the season also boasts critical acclaim, a loyal fan base of “GLEEks,” two certified Gold albums, more than 10 million songs downloads and an incredible 19 Emmy nominations – earning it the distinction of being the most-nominated series of the year.

Meanwhile, for American Idol, in the 10 years of making dreams a reality, tens of thousands of hopefuls will once again fill stadiums in their efforts to secure a golden ticket that will provide them safe passage to the group stages of the competition in Hollywood. Golden Globe-nominated actress, platinum-selling recording artist, movie producer and entrepreneur Jennifer Lopez and multiple Grammy Award-winning singer and songwriter, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steven Tyler, the frontman of Aerosmith – the best-selling American rock band of all time will join the top dawg of Hollywood himself, Randy Jackson in the 10th edition of American Idol. Season 10 promises to be a season of drama and competition like never before. In another exciting twist, the age limit has been reduced to 15 years of age promising a wealth of teenage talent flooding into the competition. Only time will tell if we’ll see the next Justin Bieber or Miley Cyrus emerge from Idol.

Both American Idol and Glee are some of the highest rated shows in Malaysian television. Last year, STAR World topped the primetime chart with American Idol Season 9 and the launch of Glee, according to the 20 and 27 January 2010 rating reports released by AGB Nielsen Malaysia. STAR World outperformed all other established English general entertainment cable channels among affluent viewers*, with No.1 ratings for both programmes.

Subscribers of Celcom are in for a treat as the telecommunication provider is offering brand new songs downloads from the cast of Glee Season 2, including Jay-Z and Alicia Key’s Empire State of Mind, Britney Spears’ Toxic, Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream, Madonna and Britney Spears’ Me Against the Music and many other hit renditions.

“STAR World remains fresh and dynamic to provide the best in first-run entertainment. We are glad to partner Celcom and Pos Malaysia to bring Malaysian viewers Glee and Pos Malaysia – an all-time favourite and award-winning series that get people emotionally engaged,” said Basil Chua, Director and Territory Head of Fox International Channels in Malaysia.
