For the month ending October 2011, Effective Measure and the Malaysian Digital Association reports the following rankings of websites visited by over 27 million Internet users inside of Malaysia:

Mudah.my, the online ‘marketplace’ moves up the ranks to hit the number 2 spot on the Site Ranking - Combined list. Almost five million unique browsers (UB) was recorded on Mudah.my in the month of October, attributing to a healthy 8.12% UB increase from the previous month.

  • Soft market conditions lead to increased interest in Property sites in Thailand

Thailand property sites saw a dramatic increase in UB in the month of October – growing by 45%, possibly due to soft market conditions caused by the recent floods.

Digital Insights: Malaysia’s High Income Audience


Portals are the most popular category of websites visited by Malaysia’s high income earners. Other popular categories include:

  • Social Network
  • Online Retail & Classified
  • Search Engine
  • News

The popularity of Portal websites among this particular audience highlights the value of funnelling content into a site to make it convenient for users, who may be time-poor, to access.

To note are the local sites that sit in the Top 10 list – thestar.com.my appeared twice, while Classified site – Mudah.my sits high at number 4.

This highlights the demand for local content. There is potential for local sites to step in to bridge the gap and attract a higher number of high-earning audiences.

Digital Insights: Malaysia’s High Spenders

Social networkers in Malaysia have indicated that they are the ones who usually are the firsts to purchase new brands and products.

This indicates that the audience on sites such as Facebook would be highly receptive to campaigns promoting new brands and products.

Google.com.my also attracts a high share of the Malaysian consumer-conscious audience – possibly to its informative nature which would serve as a research resource for those seeking news and updates on upcoming items or brands.

Media planners thinking of implementing a campaign on social networks may want to consider micromessaging to avoid over-saturation.
