McCann Erickson Malaysia leads charge with Grand Prix winner at Adfest 2011 |

McCann Erickson Malaysia’s New Straits Times Perspectives Campaign Grand Prix win in the Poster Lotus category set the tone for Malaysia’s accomplishments at the Asia Pacific Advertising Festival (AdFest) 2011 in Phuket over the weekend. McCann clinched a Gold for the same campaign, plus a Silver and Finalist single too. They also got a Finalist in the Innova category and McCann’s Ng Bee Nee won the People’s Choice winner in the Young Lotus Competition together with Grey KL’s Chan Hock Liang. “We saw an interesting variety of posters, but in this category it was more of a struggle to get agreement among the Jury. Ultimately, we went for a beautifully crafted idea with a rare edge to it that perfectly complemented the brand,” said David Guerrero, Jury President of Press Lotus and Poster Lotus categories this year. CEO of McCann Malaysia added, “The New Straits Times wanted to heighten awareness for their transparency in news reporting as well as give the reader a deeper insight into everyday news… to see the bigger picture for themselves. With this in mind a poster campaign was created showcasing international events, to encourage the viewer to go deeper beyond a story's face value and delve further into the actual story behind the scenes.” Overall, Malaysian agencies did well this year…. Malaysia's Young Creatives Win Popular Vote for Young Lotus Award at ADFEST! |
|
Thursday, 17 March 2011 20:23 |
After 18 teams in the 2011 Young Lotus Workshop completed their 24-hour challenge inspired by Pepsi, the judges gave the award to Team Pakistan.
But as a result of a popular vote among delegates, Malaysia represented by Hock Liang (Grey) and Bee Nee (McCann) swept the People's Choice' winner in the category!
Today at ADFEST in Phuket, four shortlisted teams presented their work to a live audience. The audience voted on the 'People's Choice' winner, who received a trophy at tonight's Awards Presentation alongside the overall Young Lotus winner as selected by TBWA\Asia Pacific. Apart from being crowned the region's top young creative team, this year's Young Lotus champions will see their entry fast-tracked to become a potential finalist in TBWA's The Very Short, Very Cheap Film Festival. They also receive a $5,000 Refresh Yourself/Refresh The World grant, a trophy and a trip to this year's Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. They'll also receive the adulation of creative greats such as Lee Clow and John Hunt.
So there you have it - a Professional Choice and a Popular Choice.
Apparently John Merrifield, this year’s Chairman of the Young Lotus Workshop, who is Creative-At-Large at TBWA\Asia Pacific in Singapore was rumoured to have laid a bet that the popular choice would match the judges' choice.
Well, John lost. And the festival is all the better for it!

Putra Brand Awards 2011 Results Unveiled! |

The Only Brand Awards chosen by the people The second installment of Putra Brand Awards continues to honor the achievement of local companies and SME’s brand excellence From left to right: Ahmad Izham Omar (Head of Media Prima Radio Networks), Tan Sri Syed Yusof Syed Nasir, Tony Savarimuthu (4As Vice-President), Datuk Noharuddin Nordin (Chairman of Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brands Board of Governors), HRH The Sultan of Selangor, Datuk Vincent Lee (President of 4As), Tan Sri Dato' Seri Panglima Abdul Kadir Haji Sheikh Fadzir (Executive Chairman of Sazean Development Sdn Bhd), Datin Linda Ngiam (Group MD & CEO of Star Publications), Datuk Johnny Mun (2011 Putra Brand Awards Chairman), Datuk Borhanuddin Osman (President of Commercial Radio Malaysia).
Putra Brand Awards 2011, the 2nd edition of Malaysia’s only brand awards chosen by the people took place at a splendid Gala Night dinner event last night held at the One World Hotel boasting the attendance of the biggest and reputed brand captains and brand owners in the country. The event this year was made even more memorable with the presence of HRH Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, The Sultan of Selangor who has agreed to become the royal patron of the annual event. Throughout the night, the announcement of the category winners were made including the announcement of three new awards introduced this year namely the Putra SME Brand of the Year, Putra Most Promising Brand of the Year and Putra Brand of the Year which could be regarded as the “best of the best” awards. This year, winners were awarded with the distinctive new trophy designed by William Harald-Wong & Associates to signify creativity, progress and prestige of the awards. Putra SME Brand of the Year award winner: Lewre From left to right: Datuk Vincent Lee (President of 4As), Datuk Lewre Lew (Founder of Lewre), HRH The Sultan of Selangor, Datuk Noharuddin Nordin (Chairman of Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brands Board of Governors). Launched last year as an extension of Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brands (MMVB), the prestigious brand award is a brand valuation and recognition exercise initiated by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents (4As). It is the only brand award endorsed by the MATRADE, Branding Association of Malaysia (BAM), the Malaysian Advertisers Association (MAA), and the Media Specialists Association (MSA). While MMVB identifies best brands by financial valuation and is thus limited only to accessible listed companies, the Putra Brand Awards prides itself as the only authority on brand equity measurement in Malaysia, measuring winning brands by consumer preferences. Using statistical research and an unbiased research polling system developed by Pulse Group called BRAND PULSE, a total of 6,000 consumers are involved in the research process in the selection of the award winners. This valuable research makes it the largest consumer research sampling of its kind covering all local brands and the small and medium scale enterprises in both East and West Malaysia. Bob Chua, Chief Executive Officer of Pulse Group says the large scale sampling covered respondents aged 16 years and above in urban and semi-urban areas. Putra Most Promising Brand of the Year award winner: Munchy’s. From left to right: Datuk Vincent Lee (President of 4As), Mr. Tan Soo Kuok (Chairman of Munchy’s), HRH The Sultan of Selangor, Datin Linda Ngiam (Group MD & CEO of Star Publications), Datuk Noharuddin Nordin (Chairman of Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brands Board of Governors). Shining a spotlight on the most outstanding brand owners that evening, Dato’ Noharuddin Nordin, Chairman of the Putra Brand Awards Board of Governors and CEO of MATRADE in his speech said, “Putra Brand Awards has proven to MATRADE that it is not just a one-off event, but a legitimate action driven by the need to acknowledge the industry that recognizes the importance of strong branding.” He later added that, “The recognition provides the Malaysian brands and SMEs with a platform to position their brands effectively and eventually become a global brand. The objective is clear – it is to assist the Government to discover the best of brands and to help them to compete effectively in the global arena.” President of the 4As, Datuk Vincent Lee said, “The methods used in selecting the leading brands in Malaysia are proven and transparent. This is the crucial criterion that sets this brand awards apart from the rest and this is also our way of saying that we are serious about brands.” The brand council identifies and shortlists brands based on 20 categories, which include Apparel & Accessories, Automotive, Beverage – Alcoholic, Beverage – Non Alcoholic, Communication Devices, Communication Networks, Finance, Foodstuff, Household Products, Media & Entertainment, Property Development, Fast Food, Personal Care, Transportation, Travel & Tourism and special merit awards. Putra Brand of the Year award winner: Maxis. From left to right: Datuk Vincent Lee (President of 4As), Jean-Pascal van Overbeke (Chief Operating Officer of Maxis), HRH The Sultan of Selangor, Ahmad Izham Omar (Head of Media Prima Radio Networks), Datuk Noharuddin Nordin (Chairman of Malaysia’s Most Valuable Brands Board of Governors). Sustainability continued to be an important focus at this year's awards with the introduction of the three new awards which further highlight the unparalleled success of the local brands which in turn create financial value and boost recognition in the local and international arena. “These new awards acknowledge the rather obscured and overlooked function that Malaysian companies and small-medium enterprises helm in helping the nation move her economy further” said Datuk Vincent Lee. “We could now assert that with the inclusion of these awards, the Putra Brand Awards has secured a place for every brand – without fear or favour”. The First LongXi Festival of Minds launching in Macau |
|
Friday, 11 March 2011 20:22 |
At the Macau Cultural Center this afternoon, Mr. Tomaz Mok, Peter Soh and Jimmy Lam, three of the four founders of the LongXi Creative Awards announced the inauguration of the LongXi Festival of Minds in Macau on August 21 to 23. “LongXi Festival of Minds 2011” is an annual industry event celebrating creative excellence of Chinese language traditional and new media communication and recognizes the achievements of its creators. It also serves as a platform for both Chinese and non-Chinese marketing and communication practitioners who are interested in the creative trench and insights of the ever growing Chinese market, the second largest economy of the world, to exchange ideas.” said Tomaz Mok, born in Macau and has achieved recognitions at international advertising circle. “Top speakers from the west as well as the east will be invited to our festival in Macau to share their wisdom and insights to anticipated delegates of 500. They will consist of agency creative, planning, account management people, production and creative service people, marketers and academics within and beyond Greater China region.” Explained Jimmy Lam who is also President of Asia Pacific ADFEST. “We are planning a dozen speaker sessions with inspiring topics not limited to communication but creativity at large”, Lam added “One of the pride of LongXi is the NOVA Awards. Call for entry will be opened online to advertising agency young Chinese speaking copywriter and art director team who are not older than 28 years old. Based on a brief, each team is to submit their core idea without going into executions, plus a 2 minutes video of themselves to convince the juries why they should vote them in. We will bring the top ten finalist teams to Macau to three rounds presentation to the juries, how they will implement their core idea, in a 48 hours live competition. This year, the creative brief will be provided by one of our sponsors, the ICIRCUIT, an innovative multi-touch tablet based online multi-media information, entertainment and e-commerce services.” Elaborated by Peter Soh, the third founder. The finale of LongXi Festival of Minds will be the awards presentation ceremony of LongXi Creative Awards 2011 where winners from various Chinese language markets will be invited to Macau to be honored with the rare Chinese crystal trophies of LongXi, under the spotlight. LongXi , the celestial seal of the royal dragon, is the only cross markets Chinese language advertising creative awards being included into two global annual creative rankings - the GUNN Report and the Big WON. Since it was inaugurated in 1998 by Tomaz Mok, Peter Soh, Jimmy Lam and David Sun (1952-2010), the LongXi International Chinese Language Advertising Creative Awards has undoubtedly gained the reputation as the most respected awards in Greater China region. Some creative people even dubbed LongXi as the Chinese D&AD for its prestige, integrity and, difficulty to win. As a matter of fact, most ad agencies have been very selective to submit their entries because they know that LongXi judging panel of each year only award entries with the highest standard of both creativity and execution. Until now, LongXi was only an annual creative awards, with judging and seminars by its juries in cities such as Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Xiamen, Guangzhou, Urumqi, Taipei, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. “Stepping into its 14th year in 2011, LongXi needs to excel from its halo of being a creative award to something bigger and even more influential.” Exclaimed Tomaz Mok. “In a nutshell, it will be like an expo of the best communication creativity in past 12 months. In addition to LongXi, we will invite international, regional and top local creative awards show in Greater China region to showcase their top award winning entries to the delegates.” Said Jimmy Lam.
