Alliance Bank Snags Four Digital Awards at the Kancil Awards 2010
Thursday, 16 December 2010 18:14
Alliance Bank Malaysia Berhad ended the year on a sweet note by bagging not one, but 4 awards in the Digital category at the recent Kancil Awards 2010. Its marketing campaign, “Mohd Khairuddin” for You:nique Prepaid Card, earned the Merit mention in the Digital category for Online Advertising (banners, brand applications) and Websites, and a Bronze mention for the Digital Campaign and Social Media respectively.
The Bank was the only financial institution recognised for its maverick advertising campaign this year at the Kancil Awards. To top it off, Alliance Bank also won the highest honour in the breakthrough Social Media category as there was no Gold or Silver winner.
”From the start of the campaign, we knew we had to discard our traditional communication channels when engaging our target audience (youths) for the You:nique Prepaid Card. Youths today associate themselves closely with the medium that they are most comfortable with, so we rode on that platform to connect with them. To receive these accolades certainly came as a pleasant surprise to us and we are indeed honoured by the advertising fraternity’s nod to our marketing campaign,” said Boon Kit Leong, Acting Head of Consumer Banking.
The You:nique Prepaid Card was launched stealthily through a series of videos posted on YouTube highlighting two characters, Mohd Khairuddin and his mother. The candid videos featured a mother who uploads video messages to her son, Mohd Khairuddin who is studying in the city, nagging him in an amusing mix of colloquial Malay and English to study hard and spend wisely. Mohd Khairuddin, who is embarrassed by his mother’s antics, eventually uploads his own videos to tell her that he has found an effective way to budget wisely by using the You:nique Prepaid Card.
The videos quickly became a hit with young users, garnering over 150,000 views since its public release on 22 July 2010. News of its viral popularity was picked up by more than 150 unpaid blogs as well as major publications for several months.
“Our goal was to connect with youths about how financial products can help them with their lifestyle whilst spending within their means. The idea behind You:nique Prepaid Card campaign was to ensure that it is non-conventional, realistic, fun and entertaining yet showcasing the distinctive features of the card,” said Boon.
The You:nique Prepaid Card enables cardholders to spend only what they have uploaded into the card without going into debt. It is an ideal option for budget-conscious students and adults alike, and for parents who want their dependent children to be judicious in using their allowances. The card embodies the similar unique feature of the award-winning You:nique Credit Card that enables cardholders to personalise their card design and customise their card benefits, the first and only bank to do so in Malaysia.
The Kancil Awards 2010 recognises home-grown Malaysian creative excellence in advertising, gaining its reputation through active participation of the industry's creative leadership. The Awards is acknowledged as the country's largest, most prestigious advertising awards competition.
Kancil Awards 2010: No Gold for Bolder
Saturday, 27 November 2010 22:52
Judges of the Kancil Awards took the theme “Be Bolder” to heart this year giving the local industry a wake-up call to try harder for 2011. The annual Kancil Awards recognizes the best creative ideas in the advertising industry. Only the crème de la crème of each distinct category walks away with the coveted Golden Kancil - this year, not a single agency did.
Agency of the Year Award goes to IF Interactive Sdn Bhd and McCann Erickson (M) Sdn Bhd
Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd named Advertiser of the Year
While some ideas were brilliant and some executions were outstanding, the judges failed to find a single entry combined a bold idea with great execution to a level that qualified for Gold.
Aaron Cowie, Chairman of the Organizing Committee said, “This year’s theme called for entries to ‘Be Bolder’ and challenges the industry to continually improve and push the boundaries of creativity. We need to adopt a ‘good is never good enough’ attitude and be critical with our work.”
Datuk Vincent Lee, President of the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents (4As) Malaysia called for the industry to transform Malaysia into a creative hot spot. His vision: Malaysia as a Creative Capital.
“Let us therefore get to the trenches and foster real ‘ideas-people’. It’s more than survival - it’s evolving to a higher state of creative consciousness, capability and income. It may be a dream. But nothing big ever happens without someone having the courage to dream,” he added.
Hosted by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia, the event took place recently at the Grand Ballroom of the Sime Darby Convention Centre.
The ten categories judged this year are print, television, digital, design, rebel, direct advertising, radio, integrated, copywriting and outdoor advertising.
“The telling message is that all five independent juries, Print, Film/Radio, Digital/Direct plus Bahasa and Chinese language panels were unanimous in their opinions. Each of them decided that there were no Gold standard entries this year. To give a Gold they were looking for great ideas with outstanding execution.” said Jeff Orr, Chairman of 4A’s Creative Council.
“The role of Kancil Awards is to keep raising the bar for Malaysian creativity. The best of our work should go on to win major international awards, as it has been doing in recent years. To achieve that goal we must be realistic about giving out the top awards in the Kancils,” he stressed.

Cannes Lions launch Creative Effectiveness category in 2011
Thursday, 28 October 2010 18:11
The organisers of the 58th Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival are pleased to announce the launch of the Cannes Creative Effectiveness Lions in 2011.
Creative Effectiveness Lions will honour creativity which has shown a measurable and proven impact on a client’s business - creativity that effects consumer behaviour, brand equity, sales, and where identifiable, profit.
Only entries that were either shortlisted or Lion winners, across all categories at Cannes Lions in 2010 will be eligible to enter into Creative Effectiveness Lions 2011, as these will have already been judged and established as being creatively world-class by the 2010 Cannes Lions juries. The success, therefore, of an entry in the Cannes Creative Effectiveness category will endorse the effectiveness of that creative excellence.
Entries in the Cannes Creative Effectiveness category will be rewarded for Strategy (25%), Idea (25%) and Results (50%). The entries will be judged as one section, with no categories, and the awards will be Grand Prix and Creative Effectiveness Lions (no Gold, Silver or Bronze). The winners will be honoured in Cannes on Saturday 25th of June 2011 alongside the Film, Film Craft, Titanium and Integrated Lions winners.
Commenting on the new category launch, Terry Savage, Festival Chairman, said, "With the introduction of the Cannes Creative Effectiveness awards we aim to establish a direct correlation between creativity and effectiveness. Cannes Lions has always been, and always will be, a Festival of Creativity. However now more than ever, ROI is paramount to the client and it is important that we acknowledge and reward this but without losing the essence of Cannes Lions."
Entries for the new Cannes Creative Effectiveness Lions competition open on 4 November 2010 and close on 4 March 2011. The data of all entries will be checked by the external auditors PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Further information regarding this new category and how to submit entries will be available from 4 November 2010 at www.canneslions.com

Kancil Awards 2010 – Bolder Than Ever
Tuesday, 21 September 2010 13:42
Are you bold enough for the Kancil Awards 2010? From the call-for-entry process, participants will be subjected to a complimentary brain scan by some of the top Executive Creative Directors (ECD) and Creative Directors (CD) in Malaysia’s advertising industry. And don’t expect things to get easier thereon.
The Awards is challenging the industry to “Be Bolder” this year in every sense of the word. Bold in typography, is an emphasis or exaggeration of words in a text, to “stand out from the rest”. The Kancil Awards, which is a celebration of creativity and ideas in Malaysia for over 30 years, is simply putting its hoofs down to stress that entries must do more than stand out in order to win.
“The message to participants and to the industry this year is that, we need to be bolder to constantly change the game and to stay ahead. We must rise to the challenge and tell ourselves that we are more than good enough. We need to be bold to keep breaking through and raising standards. We must constantly grow and expand our abilities, and stretch our minds and refresh our thinking,” said Chairperson of Kancil Awards 2010 Aaron Cowie, who is also the Senior Vice President, Operations at TBWA\TEQUILA, Malaysia.
This year, there will be 10 award categories – Film, Print/Poster/Point of Sale, Digital, Direct, Design, Radio, Outdoor, Copywriting, Integrated and Rebel. Instead of 10 Golden Kancils, nine will be given away. For the first time, Social Media has been included into the Digital Award Category, which also includes creative ideas for online advertising, websites, email marketing, mobile marketing and digital campaign.
Supplementary awards to be given away are Chairman, Best Young Creative, Student, Advertiser of the Year, Agency of the Year and, Media Personality of the Year.
The Student Award, which is the student-only award serves to encourage the youth to participate in the creative process. Students are encouraged to participate for a real client-agency experience, and more importantly, to get noticed by potential employers as entries are judged by some of the top ECDs and CDs in the industry. This year, the brief will be given by Celcom, the ‘client’.
The industry can also look forward to the heavy inclusion of ‘craft’ in almost every award category.
“We took a step back to look at what this creative award is all about and we found ourselves going back to ‘the work’, which is the manifestation of creativity and ideas. In order to nurture the ‘crafts’, we have decided to recognize the skills of the creative industry, which are Sound/Music, Animation, Art Direction, Typography, Illustration, Photography, and Copywriting,” said Creative Council Chairman, Jeff Orr, who is also the Group Executive Creative Director, TBWA\Tequila.
The Kancil Awards 2010 will be hosted by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As) this 26 November 2010 at the Sime Darby Convention Centre.
The Kancil website is already open for submissions at enter kancilawards.com For the first time ever, a gimmick is introduced to make the submission process more exciting. Participants will each get a “Neurolyzer”, a headgear for a virtual ‘brain scan’ to enjoy an enhanced reality experience at the Awards website.
The deadline for entries is 8 October 2010. Entry fees have been capped at RM200 per entry. Other terms and conditions apply.
